Dripping Nose Vase

  1. List and explain how the artist used principles of design. Choose from: Balance, Emphasis, Variety, Harmony/Unity, Pattern, Rhythm, and/or Movement.

I feel that this piece real underscores two main elements, the first being rhythm and the second being movement. The repetition of the noses really creates a sense of familiarity with the piece, you know what's coming, which is a good thing, it makes it interesting. This same repeptition really accents the vertical lines of the vase and helps to move the eyes not only around (by looking for the next nose) but also up and down (seeing where the nose ends). Overall, I feel that these elements were executed quite well.

What do you think the artist is trying to say with this piece?

Who knows? I attribute this lack of visible meaning to the lack of color.

What is working in this piece?

The texture of the piece and the vertical movement of the piece really make it work. It just looks interesting and I think the dimensions on it are well-suited.

What needs to be improved on?

I hate telling people to add color, but I think that this piece needs it. That being said This piece also has the great texture (to me, at least) and I think that needs to be preserved. So apply color some how and this piece will be great; possibly grad the color from light to dark, I don't know.
